Twas The Night Before Christmas

For the last few years my hometown finally figured how to attract tourists and for the second year in a row it holds the title for the best Christmas Market in Europe.

Last Friday I went on a walking tour and managed to see just a small part of all the festivities that are happening all over the town. Although the temperature was way bellow zero, the good company, food and drinks made it very enjoyable.

This was just one of many images I captured along the way, it seems there is something happening on every corner. It was a very cold night and the fog started to descend, giving this image just a hint of mystery.

We are going out and about again this Friday, hopefully there will be even more interesting and beautiful things to photograph.

Change Your Heart, Look Around You…

Still on track for Monochrome Madness Challenge, I found this weeks subject on my bathroom window. Finally a plant survived in my household! Not only that, she is in full bloom. I bought a cactus last year and poor thing was dancing on a precipice leading to afterlife, but she survived. Maybe there is hope for me…

The stage remains the same, week after week. Black background and a flashlight. Unfortunately, the lamp I bought in IKEA is not giving me a good light, so I am stuck with the flashlight…at least until I figure out where to find different bulbs for the lamp. Playing with light was challenging and fun as usual and after some 20 shots, I finally settled on this image. Post-processing was minimal, these days I try to do all the hard work in setting the scene.

Moment

I am continuing with my series of macro images of random objects, experimenting with backgrounds and light. I find it very inspiring and perfect theme for Monochrome Madness Challenge. Going through my drawers, I never know what forgotten object I will stumble upon and breathe a little bit of life, if just for a moment.

This tinny clock offered some good contrast, demanding minimum effort to set up the stage. Just a little bit of polishing and playing with the right amount of Orton effect, to get that nice softness and balance.

Sail Away With Me

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite artists is David Grays “Sail Away With Me Honey” and this image reminded me of that song. I stayed on the same track from last week, when I played with some black background and a flashlight.

I don’t know how long this interest will last, but I even bought a new lamp with adjustable arm this weekend, so I don’t have to balance my phone and the flashlight. I just need to find some more interesting subjects and maybe a different background.

Around The World

November Monochrome Madness Theme is Travel, whatever that word represents to us. It took me some time and thinking to get to this image, trying to avoid all the obvious subjects. I thought about roads, railways, cars, trains planes, shoes, suitcases, tickets…so many different things, but I thought everyone would post something along those lines.

Then I spotted this little globe – pencil sharpener that I bought years ago at the flea market in Prague and thought it perfectly encompassed what travel means to me. Aside from the fact that I bought it while I was actually traveling, the globe represents my desires and dreams to visit every corner of our little planet and even beyond.

Setting the stage was fun. I placed the globe on the cover of my laptop and placed a piece of a black cardboard as the background. For lightning once again I used a flashlight, suspending it above the globe and searching for the right angle. It seems this is one of my favorite techniques, I enjoy manipulating the image by playing with light.

Halloween Around The Corner

I was thinking what image to pick up for this week’s Monochrome Madness, when it dawned on me Halloween is almost here. Perfect!

My best friend and I have a tradition of carving pumpkins together, every year we try to find new things to carve. This image is few years old, we’ll be working on this years pumpkins over the weekend. The image looked the same when I turned it into a sepia monochrome, so I decided to use the original.

I am looking forward to carving some more pumpkins. It will be an adventure driving out of town, picking up the perfect pumpkin and choosing a theme. If I don’t get to post it before Monday, you’ll have to wait the whole year to see our art work. 😀

There Was A Time…

Elusiveness of time is forever wrapped around our life coils, confusing us with the pretence of the amount of past or future, encouraging us to ignore the only value of present.

I took this image few hours ago, thinking I would have enough time to put up the blog post on the 11th and somehow I lost track of time and now it is 12th, making my post too late and even more irrelevant.

I lost track of elusiveness and tried to put the measure on irrelevance…how confusing is that?

New Old Theme

Monochrome Madness theme for this month is Pets. I checked my past Monochrome Madness posts and was surprised to see how many feature Berta. So this is an old theme for me.

This is an image from last winter, one of the rare moments when she graced me with her attention. Those who follow me here and on Instagram are familiar with her penchant for ignoring my photography attempts, so this was a true success.

I published a colored version of this image months ago, but thought it would be nice to use it for Monochrome Madness.

Horton Hears a Who

Another Tuesday creeped upon me and I found myself searching for an image to play with for this week’s Monochrome Madness. Last few months I was just doing my Instagram project, using my phone camera, so I constantly go back to older photo sessions, trying to find something interesting.

Today I was lucky and stumbled upon this image fairly quickly. I took it two years ago, around this time. It is an abandoned flowerpot in front of the neighbouring building, where all these little succulents grow wildly. I love their little world and I remember I spent quite some time just sitting and observing how they intertwine and reach out.

Editing was very light, just a touch of softness and a gentle vignette. Sometimes, you don’t have to step all over it, just leave it be. I think I might go and look for them again, to see what happened in last two years. Maybe this time I’ll find a hidden world, just like Dr. Seuss described so long ago.

Happy Birthday To Me

I’ve been away on a vacation. Twenty days without a single new image. I kept forgetting to take my phone on my daily walks and there were some spectacular sights the nature bestowed upon me. Sea of tranquility, boats floating between the water and the sky, old rusty fisherman boats crying for better days that are behind them…

But those images are now stored only in my memory, so for this week I decided to share something else.

Loré

Today is my birthday, so I thought it would be fun to share my childhood portrait. I took the image of the actual portrait with the camera, cleaned it a little bit and here I am…Little Miss Sunshine.
