Time for another entry in Friday Fictioneers challenge, courtesy of Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. If you want to give it a try, check the info on her blog. 100 words more or less, inspired by a photo, here we go….

Her footsteps didn’t surprise Ivar. He welcomed them as his own heartbeat. Without either, there was no living.
“How did you know I was not him?”
Rowena stepped out of the shadows, treading the shimmering line that separated their worlds.
“As doppelgängers go, you are close to perfection. But he never loved me the way you do.”
Ivar moved closer to the energy field, aquamarine light reflecting in his eyes.
“I loved you in all the worlds I lived in. Even in those that didn’t have you. Come with me.”
The saddest smile danced on her face.
“It wouldn’t be the same.”
The idea for a steam punk story came to my mind few days ago. I tried to pack it all here, in 100 words. Originally, she kills him, so this is a gentler version. Also, there was no room to paint a steam punk world. I desperately need someone who will make me finally put all these stories to paper…or binary code.
I like this love story across all the worlds of the parallel universe. A steam punk jacket, I think, would deplete the ideas of identity and difference, of similarity and change. It’s classic sci-fi
I really really loved this. The notion that she knew without him saying he was a doppelganger was powerful especially with that great line, “he never loved me the way you do.” Great story. Very interested to see a bigger version with awesome steam punk goodness!
Wow! Love this story! I agree with the others, “he never loved me the way you do.” It’s a fantastic line! Would love to see more…such a great story! Heidi 🙂
I guess I’m not “hip” enough to know what steam punk is, but I really liked this story. Has lyricism and a beautiful narrative. You nailed it for me, Loré. Nice work! 🙂
I don’t know what button I pushed, but your comment ended up in spam. But I saved you from there! I am very happy you liked it, doesn’t matter if you are familiar or not with steam punk.
I almost wish I hadn’t read your summation. It takes away a bit of the romance for me. If you have a story churning inside you I do hope you are at least making notes.
This was really good. You have created an epic narrative in just 100 words. We can instantly see everything that has happened before this point and guess at what might happen next. I really enjoyed it!

I agree, I felt it too much to mix in a steam punk idea in 100 words. Thank you!

Dear Loré,
“he never loved me the way you do.” Rather bittersweet. Nicely done.

Thank you, Rochelle. It is a tragic tale, in any version.

There are so many interesting concepts to explore in there. Very romantic and sad. I’m glad she didn’t kill him.
