I hate the smell. Burned skin and disinfectants, but mostly fear. It is pouring out from the cracks in the walls, imprinting the horrors of this place onto my soul.
But I hate the silence even more.
She is shaking like a leaf in the corner, trying to make herself invisible as I open the door.
“Hi, baby girl.” I whisper.
Her tail wiggles just barely and her tired eyes seek mine.
There is no struggle when I pick her up, just soft licks on my cheek.
The gun in my hand offers a reassurance that one way or another, we will find our way out from this hell hole.
This was a remarkably well crafted piece. I was drawn in and kept on board by the writing and the situation, whatever it portends for the two of them. Very well done.
Clever to use the dog to reflect the human’s concerns. Interesting interpretation of the place in the image – those doors have suddenly taken on a new dimension for me.
Powerful. It left me feeling quite emotional – I could just see that dog.

Dear Loré,

Somehow this is sweet with that canine trust in the middle of the claustrophobic horrors.

It’s painful but it’s also the one thing I’m jealous of my dogs for: when their time comes, I can help.

Lore, I’m not sure it’s the dog that tears at our heart strings. I think it’s the excellent writing that does it. OK, that and the puppy!

Beautiful and moving. Who can resist a puppy, not I. And to pair that innocent sweetness with so much suspense: great writing.

Poor pup. And poor narrator – whatever it is, they’re in it together. The gun’s a good touch. I hope they don’t have to use it. Well told.
