Time for another entry in Friday Fictioneers challenge, courtesy of Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. If you want to give it a try, check the info on her blog. 100 words more or less, inspired by a photo, here we go….

I hate the smell. Burned skin and disinfectants, but mostly fear. It is pouring out from the cracks in the walls, imprinting the horrors of this place onto my soul.
But I hate the silence even more.
She is shaking like a leaf in the corner, trying to make herself invisible as I open the door.
“Hi, baby girl.” I whisper.
Her tail wiggles just barely and her tired eyes seek mine.
There is no struggle when I pick her up, just soft licks on my cheek.
The gun in my hand offers a reassurance that one way or another, we will find our way out from this hell hole.

Lore, I’m not sure it’s the dog that tears at our heart strings. I think it’s the excellent writing that does it. OK, that and the puppy!
