Time for another entry in Friday Fictioneers challenge, courtesy of Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. If you want to give it a try, check the info on her blog. 100 words more or less, inspired by a photo, here we go….
They call us legends…
Jack, Mary, me…
But I am still here.
I am followed by whispered tales
of sunken ships and lost treasures,
fierce battles and impossible odds.
And I am still here.
“Had you fought like a man,
you need not have been hang’d like a dog.”
Drunken fools mockingly imitate me,
when they think I can’t hear.
I despise their songs of fallen heroes,
drunken lovers and cursed gallows,
I feel the poisonous glares on my back.
They hate it that I am still here.
They wish I was gone…
because I fought like a woman
and I refused to disappear.
I have a confession to make, although this break was self-imposed and needed, I realized how I miss playing with words and stories. So, I am glad to be back.
For those of you with a curious streak, here is the link with more information about my inspiration for today’s story.
Said the same to someone else (Dawn)…even though it’s laid out like a poem, I read is as a story or monologue. I have no idea what is or isn’t poetry, but for me I saw it as a story. Hope this doesn’t matter. Hadn’t heard of the characters, but I don’t think that matters. The words are all that counts, and you put together some good ones. See you next week!
I’ve always been a great fan of pirates ( in story) and know of Ann Bonny. She seemed to have retired in respectability at the end!! Strange tale! I love your poem!! Welcome back if you have been taking a rest! – I understand!
Yes, I was on a selfimposed break, really needed it. I am vey happy you liked my poem, I’ve been watching this tv show “Black Sails” and my inspirationg connected the dots.
Love, love, love this one Loré! It captures the feeling of epic tales and quieter back stories. SO well done! And thanks to my son, i’m sure I’ve heard that piece of music far too many times… luckily, it’s quite nice to listen to! 😉 Great piece this week.
Oh, thank you so much. Lately, I’ve been in the mood for epicness.
I know what you mean about the music, I I used to drive my mom crazy with Depeche Mode.
Dear Loré,
Welcome back. Lovely poem and I really enjoyed the history lesson.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Fabulous! It’s an interesting story/poem without the background, but with the background knowledge, it is amazing.

There’s something quite haunting about the pace of this piece, and the repetition. Very nicely done.
